Telecom Jargon 101

Billing Address
The address where the client’s bill goes to; Can be different from Physical Address, which is where the service is being delivered to.
BL
Business Line. Sometimes also referred to as a 1FL by the LECs.
CD
Call Display.
CF
Call Forwarding.
DA
Directory Assistance, also known as 411.
Demarc
Demarcation, the physical place where the LEC deems their responsibility to begin, from the Demarc to the outside world). It’s typically a punch down wire block (“Bix Block”).
DID
Direct Inward Dial Number.
DSL/ADSL
Digital Subscriber Line; a component used in the provisioning of Business Internet services.
ER
Equipment Record; a detailed listing of business line billing which is needed to move business lines (“port”) from Carrier A to Carrier B.
Interconnect
A company that does phone system and cabling work. Anything from the Demarc in. For example, assigning extensions, or cross connecting new business lines.
LEC
Local Exchange Carrier, sometimes more precisely described as ILEC (Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier, meaning Bell and Telus) and CLEC (Competitive Local Exchange Carrier, which is everyone else).
LOA
Letter of Authorization; a document which gives Tempest permission to order Equipment Records, place Move/Add/Change Orders, and move voice services from Carrier A to Carrier B, all at the direction of the client.
Loop
A component in the delivery of business line service, that runs from the client demarc to the Carrier’s Central Office (“CO”).
MACD
A Client Order to Move, Add, Change, Delete a portion of their telecom services.
MRC
Monthly Recurring Charge.
MPLS
Multi-Protocol Label Switching. A data network service used by multi-site clients to send data privately and securely between their offices.
NRI
Non Recurring Install Charge.
PCF
Permanent Call Forward; a telephone number that forwards incoming calls to another number of the client’s choosing.
Port/Porting
The act of moving a telephone number (“TN”) from Carrier A to Carrier B. Also known as local number portability (“LNP”).
PRI
Primary Rate Interface; a digital phone line bundle that carries up to 23 simultaneous calls. Typically used by clients with 50+ employees. Example: A PRI with 1000 DIDs can support 23 simultaneous calls, and on the 24th call, the caller will get a busy signal.
RespOrg
Responsible Organization; the underlying carrier of toll free service.
Reterm
Retermination. To move a toll free number from ringing on one telephone number, to ringing on a different telephone number.
SIP
Session Initiated Protocol; a toll quality way of routing Local and Long Distance calls over the Internet.
Static IP
An IP address that remains the same, always. Generally associated with Dedicated Fibre Internet-level (“DIA”) services. Different from Dynamic IP, which is an IP address that changes on a regular basis, and is generally associated with Business Internet-tier services.

Terminating Number
The TN that a TF rings on.
TF
Toll Free; a Toll Free (800/888/877/866/855/844) Number.
TN
Telephone Number.
VOIP
Voice Over Internet Protocol; a way of routing Local and Long Distance calls over the Internet.
3 Way
3 Way Calling; a business line feature that allows you to have 3 people on a phone call.
